JS Tip 574: Implementing the Project (The Last in the Series)
Okay. Let’s think about the five project-management steps:
One: Plan.
Two: Analyze.
Three: Design.
Four: Develop.
Five: Implement. This is it. The last discussion.
Implementing is ending. Moving on. Handing off.
Let’s look at the specifics of implementing for Debbie’s doghouse:
Tie any loose ends. Stop for a moment. Look around. Are there matters that need to be resolved? Resolve them. (Maybe caulk around the roofline? Yes. Do it.)
Capture what you’ve done. For future use. For history. For the record. Identify what you’ve learned. Identify suggestions for improvement. Put these lessons and suggestions in writing—sometimes called “Lessons Learned.” (“Remember to caulk around the roofline.”)
Turn it over to someone else. Give your written notes to whomever might use them. The family file for next time? Your children? Your grandchildren? Dogster magazine?
Then walk away. As Calvin said to Hobbes in their last strip, “It’s a magical world, Hobbes, ol’ buddy . . . Let’s go exploring!”
What would you like to explore next week? Suggest something.
We love this stuff.
