JS Tip 506: A Case Study

A case study. A first for the Tips. Consider the case study. Share it with your co-workers, friends, and family. Talk about it. Discuss the questions.

Cathy’s Refrigerator

Cathy called in late for work. Cathy—a divorced mom—struggled to make ends meet.

That morning, she had learned her refrigerator had died and her children’s lunches had spoiled. She had to clean up the mess, go to the grocery store, remake the lunches, and take the children to school (because they’d missed the bus).

She was in tears with frustration. Stupid refrigerator.

That evening, a pick-up truck stopped in front of Cathy’s home.

The company president was driving.

The company vice-president was in the passenger seat.

A refrigerator was in the back.

They unloaded the fridge and asked Cathy where she wanted it. The tears welled up again.

Some Discussion Questions

  1. Your reaction?

  2. Probably Cathy’s reaction?

  3. How might the company president and vice-president have learned about Cathy’s situation?

  4. What might a single event like this do to company morale? To company loyalty? Is that why the company president and vice-president did it?

  5. So what do we learn? What do we take away?
